Tips for desgining a guesthouse bathroom in South East Asia:

1. The most important thing to remember when designing a guesthouse bathroom is that the shower should get the entire bathroom wet. These bathrooms need to have a toilet, a sink and a shower, and all three of these elements should be in a room as small as possible, no matter how spacious the bedroom is, or how much extravagant and unused space there is in the common areas of the hotel. If you are forced to design a bathroom with lots of space, make sure the sink and toilet are right next to the shower, so that they get properly drenched. There should be no differentiation as to where the shower ends and the toilet area begins. No curtain, no shower basin. The shower should just be a showerhead sticking out of the wall, with a cold water faucet to turn it on. If there is a toilet paper holder, it should be placed in an area where any roll of paper on it will get wet to the point of disintegration.
2. The drain in the bathroom should never be at the lowest part of the floor. Ideally, the lowest part of the floor should be near the toilet, so that guests will always need to step in a puddle of water to use the toilet.
3. After a shower, there should never be a dry place to put a roll of toilet paper that a guest may have been protecting from the shower by leaving in the bedroom. The back of the toilet and all parts of the sink should be drenched. Any towel racks should have a distance from the wall that is less than the radius of a half used roll of TP, so that TP can not be ballanced on top of the rack. Towel rack should be placed far enuf away from the toilet so that it is not an easy reach from a sitting position on the toilet, in the event that a dwindling roll of TP can be balanced there.
4. Its best not to have a towel rack at all, no hook, no rusted nail, nothing to hang a towel or a bag of toiletries on anywhere.
5. The light should never be near the mirror. Tourists love backlighting while trying to shave, etc.
6. Tho labor is cheap, don't have the staff that is lazing around the side of the hotel in your over-staffed-for-the-low-season establishment scrub the bathroom. A hefty layer of grime and soap scum adds to the third world experience western tourists crave!
7. Any fixures such as towel racks, shelves, mirrors, toilet paper holders, etc should be as cheap as possible, and should never be replaced when they break.
8. All bathrooms should have a dirty, filthy little rug just outside the door. Guests will need to step on this rug everytime the exit the bathroom because the whole place is wet from the shower. The rug should never be laundered. It should look so bad guests will shudder everytime they need to step on it. The little rug should look so bad that guest wouldn't hypothetically let a mangy dog sleep on it. Do not shake out the rug, as a little layer of grit sticking to the wet feet when guests step onto the tile of the main room is prefered. (this facilitates a transfer of the grit and grime to the bed if the guest chooses to recline in the room anytime soon.)

Actually, the batrooms on this trip have not been too bad for the most part. My curent bathroom has only 3 of the eight features listed above. But the toilet needs to be flushed about 5 times before its done.
It's raining and thundering hard here today. I was going to go on the back of a motobike to a waterfall and to a national park with wild animals and lots of birds today, but it looks like the rain may not let up for quite a while. I took a little impromptu tour of the area around here on the back of a moto yesterday, visiting the market and a long lovely beach that is all set for massive development. The market was pretty typical, dark and crowded, with muddy paths inside to negotiate. Stalls full of tacky cheap clothes , sundries, jewelery, food, etc. My driver thought I wanted something specific and was escorting me around trying to find what I wanted, making a leasurely exploration of the market impossible. I was only half kind of looking for maybe a t-shirt or something, something with Khmer writing on it that wasn't obviously a tourist souvenier, but to no avail. The driver kept stearing me to Angkor Wat t-shirts. Isn't there some kind of Cambodian tag-line or slogan that is emblazoned on a t-shirt? Or do they all wear Deisel and Porn Star knock offs, as in Thailand? Actually, they wear alot of button down shirts. They look refreshing as they billow out behind on a motobike.
Anyway, after the market, we took a ride not too far out into the countryside to this empty beach that has the land behind it all parceled out and fenced off for a slew of hotels to be built. We passed a few villages and saw pigs and a little boy tending this great big heard of cows. You get beyond the reach of the electric lines and people are living like they must have 500 years ago.
Well my ankles are being feasted on by some rainy day mosquitos, so I am signing off now. Love Maxwell

I'm planning to go see Angkor Wat in Feb 2008 and I've got tons of questions.

1. Is Feb a good time to go (weather wise) ? Hopefully its not too touristy then.
2. I might be going with parents and my sister's family : 2 adults, 2 elderly and 2 kids(an 8 month old incl.). Is the political climate safe for them or should I just make the trip on my own ?
3. Any other precautions to take ? shots ?
4. Is 3 days enough to see Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm, etc ? I'm planning to fly from SF to Singapore and then fly from Singapore to Siem Reap. I believe I can get the visa online(?).
5. Any other off-the-main-circuit places to visit around Angkor Wat ?

Thanks a ton,

....over the Christmas holidays was visiting with the kids at the Phomn Penh Apsara Arts Association. We were there for about 5 minutes before they started sharing candy and hugs and jokes. They were so welcoming and sweet. And the dancers were all amazing. I put a few pics in the Tribe album. I really recommend going there. It just blew me away.

http://www.apsara-art.org/ This is their website. I believe they are also listed in Lonely Planet but the performance time in LP is wrong by 30 mins.

Christmas in Cambodia...

Hi all --

My wife and I are going to be in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap between Christmas and New Year's. First time in Cambodia for her, first time in either of those places for me. We're looking for two things:

1. Nice midrange/small hotels (basically, no squat toilets--I've gotten in trouble before for booking us into a place with a porcelain hole in the floor--or shared facilities, but no Sofitels, either) in both places; and
2. Advice on transit options. We'll be flying into Phnom Penh from Bangkok, but have as yet not decided on how to get to Siem Reap. As a longtime Southeast Asian boat-trip enthusiast, I prefer to go by water, but don't want to be drowned nor deafened by longtails (like the "fast boats" between Vientiane and Luang Phabang, for example).

Favorite Phnom Penh neighborhoods?

Hey, all --

I'm off to Phnom Penh this winter, and thinking about where to stay. Looks like lots of hotels are concentrated along Sisowath Quay -- is that the place to stay, then, or are there other neighborhoods you recommend more?

Boeng Kak doesn't look like my scene--I'm looking for a little hotel rather than a guesthouse, a bit nicer than the backpacker standard.

I can spend up to $30, but will happily pay less.

Your insights are much appreciated.

SENTENCED HOME
David Grabias, Nicole Newnham (U.S., 2006)
In English and Cambodian (with English subtitles)

NICOLE NEWNHAM IN PERSON!
Sentenced Home tells the heartbreaking story of three young Cambodian American men entangled in an impossible web of wartime politics, cultural identity, and the blindness of justice. After fleeing the Khmer Rouge as children and settling in Seattle, Loeun Lun, Manny Uch, and Kim Ho Ma were drawn into gang life, and ultimately jail. Due to a change in immigration law triggered by the events of September 2001, they now face automatic deportation back to Cambodia. They suffer a double penalty: having already served their original prison sentences and moved on with their lives, they still face deportation. Following them from the United States to Cambodia, directors David Grabias and Nicole Newnham bring to light their heartbreaking stories, and reveal the human cost of an inhumane immigration policy.
THE BURNT THEATER
Rithy Panh (Cambodia/France, 2005)
In Khmer with English subtitles

(Les artistes du théâtre brûlé). In the center of Phnom Penh sits the Preah Suramarith National Theatre, once a glorious institution and symbol of a modern, prosperous Cambodia. It now lies abandoned, gutted by fire, in the shadow of a glitzy casino being constructed next door. It is to this burnt theater, with its ghosts living and dead, that director Rithy Panh brings a coterie of actors to live and rehearse. He asks them how to rebuild their country when the transmission of culture, so essential to identity, is almost impossible, and the blinding force of capitalism so powerful. An astonishing blend of documentary, fiction, and performance, The Burnt Theatre is built with the dramatic arc of a narrative film and the intimacy of a documentary. Panh fuses these components into a remarkable document of survival and resilience, confirming his status as one the world's most eloquent filmmakers.

photography teacher wanted in Phnom Penh

A photography teacher is needed to teach 2 workshops on photography, Monday and Wednesday, 3:30 to 4:30 to Cambodian students. English speaking ability is a must, but you do not need to be a native speaker. Ideal for someone who wants to teach English and live in Cambodia to take pictures, as English conversation classes with a native speaker are easy to pick up. I can no longer teach the class due to schedule conflicts. This is an excellent chance to help out a grup of students who have had little or no access to art or photography, so any help is appreciated.

Email iamdugmoore@yahoo.com if interested.

question about power conversion

hey all,

I'm heading back to Siem Reap for 2 months to shoot a very small documentary project. It's just me and my trusty Handycam (hopefully with better equipment on subsequent visits) and I was wondering if any of you know anything about the specs written on the labels of most electronics and if you remember what the plugs looked like in the Siem Reap area.

The US runs on a 110V/60Hz system. I know Cambodia for the most part runs on the more common 220V/50Hz system. The label on my Handycam battery charger reads:

100-240V 50/60Hz 13W (pulls 13 watts)

does this mean this is dual voltage? has anyone travelled with their camcorder and remember if they needed to bring a power converter/transformer? plug adapters?

any tips will be greatly appreciated. I can't afford to have my equipment burn out while I'm there.

Hello folks!

I'm relcating to Phnom Penh in a few weeks and am looking for a safe and mellow place to stay at. I'm going to be staying in a guesthouse for a while, at least until I find an apartment.

I'm looking for a 2 bedroom / 2 bathroom apartment that is centrally located, or near the embassy area (Russina, Japan, Thai embassies).
If anyone has any specific rental connections there, please send any information.

Also, has anyone stayed at the "Okay" guesthouse in Phnom Penh? It will be close to where I'll be working, and I have heard that it is quiet and low key. Is this true?

hostage situation

from my brother

In case anyone asks, let me provide a quick update on the hostage situation that occurred today in Siem Riep, the main town closest to Angkor Wat.

Ambassador Ray is in Hawaii and charge Mark Storella happened to be in Siem Reap. As Acting DCM, I therefore “held the fort” here in Phnom Penh, convening the country team’s emergency action committee and remaining in close contact throughout the day with the Ambassador, Mark and the ops center in Washington, among many others.

Some of the facts remain murky. However, at approximately 9:30 AM four Cambodians armed with an AK-47 assault rifle broke into an international school and took up to 70 pre-school children hostage. Two American children were included, along with children from Australia, Canada, France, UK, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Korea and Cambodia. The hostage takers apparently demanded cash, weapons and safe passage to the Thai border. All accounts indicate that this was a criminal attack, not a politically-motivated terrorist incident.

By mid afternoon, the police informed the hostage-takers that they would provide cash and a van but no weapons. When the van with the hostage-takers and at least one child began to drive out of the school compound, police closed the gate, forcing the van to stop. Police then rushed the van and apprehended the four hostage-takers. Some reports indicate that up to three of the four hostage-takers were killed. Police also discovered that one of the hostages, reportedly a Canadian child, was killed. Members of the embassy staff have talked to the fathers of both American children held hostage, and both confirmed that their children are safe.

Further investigation will doubtless reveal more details. Of course, it is a sobering incident, especially for those of us with children here in Cambodia.

Hello Fellow Travelers,
I am on my horneymoon and we are trying to decide the best way to get to Angkor Wat before it becomes disneyland. We have heard a few horror stories about bus trips from Bangkok = ok until the border and then horrible roads, broken buses, a 5 hour journey being 10......

Another access point is via the 4,000 islands

And then of course there is always airplanes

Can anyone suggest a route they highly recommend or tips, pointers, etc....it would be grand.

Currently in Vang Vieng, Laos and loving the slow life.
Cheers, Jen

i'm going to cambodia (from singapore) for about 5 days.
flying into siem reap, visiting floating villiages, flying out of phnom penh back to singapore.

i have anti- melarials (mefloquine)
but i've heard the meds can be unpleasant in side effects.
also, my companion will NOT have anti-malarial meds.

has anyone been and can share their personal opinion of the risk percentage of those areas for the amount of time we will visit?
i'd rather not take the meds.

I had a taxi driver in Cambodia that was great!

I wanted to pass on this information, as I've traveled a bit and hired various drivers with varying qualities. Tong, the driver that picked me up at the airport in Siam Reap, was truly a blessing.

He really helped me out, and I changed my travel plans by his suggestions, and ended up seeing much more than I had planned. He is a good driver, knowledgeable about Cambodian history, especially the history of the temples. He normally dropped me off at the temples, and I took pictures on my own, as I prefer to do that solo. (He also has a car, which made me feel much more relaxed).

I'm sure he could suggest a guide, or would be willing to be a guide, but you may need to pay him more. I paid 20 to 25 USD a day from Sun up to sun down. He never hasseled me to buy things or do things I didn't want to do, he only made suggestions. I began to trust him when his suggestions turned out to be better than my plans.

Recently he contacted me and said that he could arrange tuk-tuk tours of the temples, as some people prefer to see them this way. I think that he said they were $12 USD a day. For a real tour guide and professional but easy going driver, he is the man for the job. He is interesting, and a really nice person. You could feel comfortable having him be a guide for your family, as he is very polite.

Contact Tong. His e-mail is tongratha@yahoo.com

His mobile phone is 012 - 919 - 854

He made for a truly enjoyable experince. It would not have been the same without him. Please tell him Douglas from Korea/ USA said hello.

Good luck!

as about 20 or 30 of us were, we feel, unfairly terminated from service without warning. This tribe is now unmoderated because my old account is no more.

I often come across references to Khmer tattoos, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for books that are illustrative of the underlying paradigm into which these fit?

Are these representations of religion which is outside the usual spiritual practices of the region? It just struck me last night night that this is something I have very little knowledge of.

Hi everybody. I notice that most of the westerners who have visited Cambodia have gone to Siem Reap/Angkor and Phnomh Penh. Has anybody spent much time in the other areas of the country? While I definitely want to visit those areas I am curious as to the rest of the country, and what it is like, how on the mend the infrastructure seems to be, etc.

Ya know, it's nice to see people on here actually being interested in the culture and history of Cambodia. Most caucasians I know only want to learn Khmer so they can either get with a Cambodian woman or cuss people out in the language. And they don't give a crap about the history or culture.

I was walking through Ta Prohm (in Angkor, where giant ancient banyon? trees have twisted their way into the temple ruins) and the rain began to fall softly. I could hear thunder rumbling in the distance and the leaves of the trees were rustling. The air starts to feel heavier and I'm just sitting there staring up at the jungle canopy above me and feeling really small and alone, cuz there weren't any other people around. Just me and somewhere past the outer wall, my moto fellow.

Sporadically, I'll hear this really soft slightly musical clacky clack sound, like muted maracas. except I'm in the middle of nowhere and I hear all kinds of noises, so I don't really think it's maracas. the wind's picking up and starting to moan...

"woooooooond aaaallllurrrr..."

"woooondaaahhhllurrrr..."

"woooonnnnnndahhlllarrrr..."

suspiciously human sounding.

and suddenly from behind a tree out steps this little kid, couldn't be more than 5, holding up bamboo windchimes that he's shaking at me

"...one... dollar..." he whispers, like it's our little secret.

hello all,
I lived in Cambodia back in 1994, working as a stringer for the AFP and as an archivist at the Tuol Sleng museum. Had a wonderful time and met some fantastic people. I spent a lot of time with a group of philosophy students at the University. I returned for a one month visit back in 2000 and hope to return again later this year. I am curious about anyone's experience visiting the coast and Bokor - these places were too dangerous to visit when I was there before.
Cheers,
Mark

If anyone is looking for a good volunteer opportunity in Cambodia, I highly recommend
working with Sovantha the founder of the Angkor Assn. for the Disabled. He's truly an
amazing guy.
