I'm planning to go see Angkor Wat in Feb 2008 and I've got tons of questions.
1. Is Feb a good time to go (weather wise) ? Hopefully its not too touristy then.
2. I might be going with parents and my sister's family : 2 adults, 2 elderly and 2 kids(an 8 month old incl.). Is the political climate safe for them or should I just make the trip on my own ?
3. Any other precautions to take ? shots ?
4. Is 3 days enough to see Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm, etc ? I'm planning to fly from SF to Singapore and then fly from Singapore to Siem Reap. I believe I can get the visa online(?).
5. Any other off-the-main-circuit places to visit around Angkor Wat ?
Thanks a ton,
rax

Re: Travelling in February
Mon, October 29, 2007 - 7:15 PMyou get an option to buy a day pass or a 3-day pass. i would actually recommend the 3-day pass for siem reap alone. there are tons of sites to see and they are really each a very individual awe site. it's not like traveling in europe where you see cathedral after cathedreal, etc.
i was skeptical and bought a day pass and then ended up 3 day passes in a row, which is much more expensive if you buy the 3-day pass.
i realllly love phnom penh. if you can get the time i recommend hanging out there for a bit in addition to angkor wat -

Thanks,
Yea, I think 1 day would be too little, and two days costs as much as the 3 day pass.
I'm going to read-up about Phnom Penh and see if I can spend some time there.
Right now my list of places to visit in and around Angkor is:
angkor wat (temple complex, watch surise) : go in before sunrise when others are outside
angkor thom
kbal spean (sculptures under water stream)
Phnom Bakheng (view of angkor sunset)
hot air balloon?
ta prohm (nature takes back)
ta keo
bayon (faces)
Bantey Kdei
Bantey Samre
Bantey Srei (pink stone, intricate carvings)
pre rup
Pre(ah) Khan
preah ko
Tonle Sap Lake (floating village)
Sambor Prei Kuk (6th century, before angkor)
terrace of elephants
terrace of leper king
bakong (pyramid temple)
baphuon (reclining buddha)

Re: Travelling in February
Tue, October 30, 2007 - 10:22 AMI'd actually say 3 days is the minimum you should plan to visit the temples & sites around Angkor Wat. When I was there if you bought a 3-day pass sometime in afternoon they allowed you to use it for for that evening (catching the sunset somewhere) and then 3 full days after that. So, spent a little more like 4 days so I could see other things outside of the temples & ruins in Angkor, e.g. stores like artisans d'angkor. I'd also add the Land Mine Museum to the list. -

Re: Travelling in February
Sun, November 11, 2007 - 3:29 AMThanks Benjamin,
Yea, I think I will take the 3 day pass. The pass is only for the main complex, right? i.e. I dont need a pass for the other temples around Phnom Penh. I think I will spend about 5-6 days there, so I should have ample time.
Thanks, Artisan's d'angkor was on my list and I'll add the Land Mine museum.
I'm also thinking of taking some small toys for the kids. -

Re: Travelling in February
Mon, November 12, 2007 - 11:58 AMI think you're right that the pass only applies to the main complex around Angkor Wat (altough how that is defined, I'm not sure). As for toys for the kids, I'd say save the $'s and use it to buy whatever trinkets the kids are trying to sell you when you get there.
