My Fav Thing

....over the Christmas holidays was visiting with the kids at the Phomn Penh Apsara Arts Association. We were there for about 5 minutes before they started sharing candy and hugs and jokes. They were so welcoming and sweet. And the dancers were all amazing. I put a few pics in the Tribe album. I really recommend going there. It just blew me away.

www.apsara-art.org/ This is their website. I believe they are also listed in Lonely Planet but the performance time in LP is wrong by 30 mins.

What's your fav thing to do in Cambodia?

One of our favorite things we did (got back on Sunday) was spending time at the NACA orphanage, where we were very boisterously (and hopelessly, in my case) tutored in Khmer dance and music. I gave my camera to the kids, and my memory card was promptly full... I'll post some pictures soon.

If you're wandering around the riverfront, and looking for something to do, consider an orphanage visit... there are posters in the Hope and Anchor pub/guesthouse, and elsewhere... or alternately, just find a tuktuk driver in a blue Childsafe shirt and see if he's got any suggestions. There are few more rewarding ways to interact with young people in Phnom Penh, and it offers some relief from the rather mercenary desperation you encounter among kids on the streets.

We also enjoyed a couple of very good meals at restaurants supporting good causes: Friends the Restaurant and Romdeng, run by Mith Samlanh in PP, and benefiting street kids, and Le Rit's, run by NYAMO, an NGO that assists at-risk and disadvantaged women. Both were a nice alternative to the fancy, foreigner-owned, 70%-as-expensive-as-California expat drinking and dining haunts that seem to be mushrooming all around Phnom Penh.

Yes! I loved Friends (the restaurant) too. The service and food were both amazing. I went there a few times on our trip.

Also did some shopping at Friends (the store?). They have lots of cute handicrafts and clothes and Cambodian books for kids (with Cambodian and English).

I also gave the kids my camera and they went nuts. It was too cute.

A friend and I spent 3 weeks in Cambodia in january and loved every minute of it. we ended up working as volunteers at NACA Orphanage for 2 weeks. i cant even begin to describe how incredible an experience it was. When we got back to Australia we started the Peace and Freedom Student Movement. One of our main goals is to raise money for the ongoing support of NACA, and in june 4 members including myself will be returning to cambodia to deliver over $2000. The money will be used to build toilet and kitchen facilities at the orphanage, purchase rice and foodstuffs, take the kids to the water park (which we did in january as well) and purchase new clothes and toys. we have posted photos of NACA on our website which im sure will bring back a lot of great memories for you guys too!

While in PP we had dinner with Nick Ray, who is the Lonely Planet writer for their Thailand guidebooks but lives in Phnom Pehn, and he passed on rumours he heard about Friends so we gave it a miss. We heard the same rumour when crossing the Thai/Khmer border so unfortunately it may be true. Did you guys hear anything about it while you were there?

anyway, our photos are posted on our website at www.myspace.com/peaceandfreedom_sm
